The domestic steel industry is vital to Australia’s economy. Steel is a key ingredient in infrastructure and construction, manufacturing, mining and agriculture. Not only does it form the backbone of the Australian economy, it plays a vital role in nation-building.

The ASI believes the recommendations made in this White Paper should be adopted by federal, state and territory governments to ensure the continued development of a sustainable Australian steel industry in the 2020s and beyond.

The ongoing uncertainty and indecision in Commonwealth government energy and climate policy impedes investment and adds risk to Australia’s steel industry and value chain.

Global overcapacity in steel production and increasingly protectionist trade policies have led to an increase in the dumping of marginally costed steel and fabricated steel onto global export markets. Robust and timely anti-dumping provisions that are world-class are needed to provide effective defence against unfair trade to Australian steel manufacturers and fabricators.

Increasing steel tonnage through the local supply chain will improve utilisation levels within the industry and underpin its viability. Use of locally milled and fabricated steel is critical to the industry and in the best interests of Australia’s economy.

Compliance with Australian Standards, independent certification and traceability provide assurances in terms of quality and safety in manufacture, installation, fit-for-purpose performance and durability.

Australia needs strong economic management to unlock the investment required for roads, rail, hospitals and schools needed by Australia’s burgeoning population and to enable businesses throughout the country to reach their full potential to reach its full potential.
